The OUYA Console

Good day, everyone!

I’ll get the most important news out of the way first: MEGATROID launches worldwide on August 1!

Now that you know that, let’s talk about consoles. Specifically, let’s talk about one that doesn’t yet exist on the market, but has the possibility to become a haven of creativity and experimental gameplay: The OUYA.

Triolith Entertainment have already pledged for a devkit, so we’ll be getting an OUYA console to the office soon, so we can play around with it. The reason we jumped on that wagon was of course because of the potential MEGATROID has on it. We’ve played MEGATROID with a gamepad before and it just feels so much more “right” than a touch-screen ever could. I’m sorry, but that’s the truth; physical buttons will always win over virtual ones.

Now, I’m not saying that touch-screens are bad for gaming or anything, they just don’t emulate physical buttons as well as the actual physical buttons do.

So now we have the OUYA as a target. The best part of it, I think, is that it is an Android-based console. Since we already publish games on Android, we have experience on working towards that platform.

As I see it, the major changes for an OUYA version of MEGATROID, would be:

  • Overhaul the UI to use a Game Pad

  • Optimize and adjust textures to nVidia TEGRA 3 compatibility

  • More visual eye-candy

Of course, throwing money at a still non-existing console and expressing interest in porting it is still some yards away of a true commitment, but by the time our OUYA arrives at our doorstep, I’m sure MEGATROID will be ripe for a port!

In either case, we’re really excited about the opportunity that OUYA creates for both developers and consumers. Being on the launch table would be sweet indeed.
